Phonics – Our Intent

Phonics is taught using the Read Write Inc (RWI) Programme. Teachers follow structured lessons as part of this programme. The sounds are taught progressively; Set 1, Set 2 and Set 3 sounds. Each sound is introduced with a short rhyme and picture to make the sound memorable. These can be found at the bottom of this page.

Red words are also taught. These are words that cannot be sounded out and have tricky letters. These words need to be taught to be read on sight.

Phonics for pupils in KS2

Pupils moving into KS2, who are still not secure in phonics, receive early reader provision through use of the RWI resources.  Extra intervention is put into place to ensure that they catch up quickly. The children are assessed half-termly using RWI assessments to identify gaps and inform future intervention. We also understand that phonics does not work for everyone, and therefore use a whole word reading approach for identified pupils. Within this, we also share high quality texts that inspire and motivate the children to want to read themselves.

In addition to RWI sessions…

  • Phonics activities are provided in whole class reading sessions to supplement the provision through the RWI intervention .
  • For those pupils on the RWI programme, closely matched RWI take home books are provided.
  • The application of phonics learning is developed across the wider curriculum.
